The other day, someone reached out to me and asked me why I'm talking so much about mindset.
There is more than one reason behind that. First, it is the most important thing for any independent career. Not only in the music industry. Once you have the right mindset, there's nothing that can hold you back to achieve your goals. Second, I got really nice feedback on my mails about mindset from my subscribers. They simply wanted more. So I'm giving it to you 🙂
As for the right mindset, I don't mean "just believe in yourself and you become a superstar". No, not at all. Forget about this nonsense. What I mean is that—given you have the right mindset—you know yourself so good that you always know how you get things done, including failures, setbacks, disappointments, losing friends, and all the other sad things that can happen.
However, all that talk about the right mindset is for nothing if you don't have intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic means that it's coming from your inside. You shouldn't have other people or circumstances kick your lovely bottom in order to get you going. It must come from you.
If you don't have the urge to get your music out there and get so many fans that you can make a living from it, then it might be fine to just pursue it as a hobby. Do what you want.
As I said, the right mindset is the most important. And I think so because it is like a foundation. This foundation helps you to build everything that comes right after: skillset, network, branding, management, marketing, growth... the list goes on.
If an upcoming independent musician asks me what he or she should do, I always try to find out where they are with their mindset. Because if they aren't where I would like them to be yet, everything else is for vain. Over the past decade, I've met so many bands and solo artists that played amazing music. But so many of them couldn't handle the dips in their careers. And these dips come to everyone. I've seen bands disappear over and over.
A few weeks back, a subscriber did send me amazing feedback. Inuk (that's his name) explained to me his understanding of how everything in life goes in circles. Everything is moving up and down, back and forth. Just by understanding this, you could gain an advantage over many people in our fast-pacing world...
Take a break in order to accelerate to new heights. Fail in order to win next time. Skip one small-town gig in order to get invited to that big international festival.
From all the feedback, I know that some of my subscribers have already reached a certain state of mind, others aren't at their right mindset yet. My mission is to remove the hurdles that keep independent musicians from gaining momentum and achieving their goals. That's why I help with mindset, but also with management and marketing.
What's the biggest struggle in your music career at the moment?
Today, my action step for you is a very simple one:
Tell me what you would like to hear about more. Is it mindset, management, marketing, or something else? Be honest with me and tell me where you're stuck so that I can help you overcome this as soon as possible.
