30 years ago, it must’ve been amazing to be a music artist. Because you had only one job: make music.
This image changed over the past decades. And now, it’s like there are no successful “pure” musicians anymore. Aside from a few superstars and the employed session players. The superstars have huge teams around them to support them in any way, shape or form. And the session players are getting paid to play music for other artists. Not their own.
You are different.
You neither want to be the next superstar who signed an adhesion contract. Because in the past decade we saw a change in the industry. So many artists got dropped and exploited. It’s not funny.
Nor do you want to be a session player who can’t express their own creativity on a deeper level. You are more than that. And you know it better than anyone else. You are not a musician, you’re an independent artist.
As an independent artist, you don’t make music, you create music.
Creating music is different from being a simple session player or a gagged superstar. And these are only two examples of people who can’t express their true innovative creativity. You want to express yourself. Don’t you?
While doing music, you create stuff: content for your followers, ideas for your business, experiences for your personal growth.
So you’re a creator, not a musician.
Imagine spending the rest of your life on the terms of someone else. Not only does that sound boring as hell. Furthermore, it’s freaking depressing. At least for me. I don’t want to spend my valuable time doing something I don’t like. Life’s too short for that sh-t. What about you?
Would you rather create amazing things, or work for someone who does that?
There’s no shame in doing the second. If that’s what you want. I don’t want that for me, and I know many creatives who don’t want this either. They build their dreams by doing what’s necessary each day.
That’s why it’s important for you to look over the edge and grow your mind. And the best part: if you start now, you’ll achieve something.
Full-time or part-time, young or old, big city or countryside, tech-savvy or not, all this doesn’t matter.
You need to think outside the box. There’s no right way to make it as a music artist in the world. We need to leave this illusionary bubble behind - and create our own.
Here’s how you can start now:
Begin to embrace the thought of being an incredible creative business owner. It’s not about reinventing the wheel. That would be dumb. Haha… It’s about creating your unique path by being inspired by others. But certainly not from the old music industry.
